Severe Toothache
Sudden or escalating tooth pain is one of the most common dental emergencies — and one of the most misunderstood. Intense pain usually indicates infection, pulp damage, or an abscess. It does not resolve on its own.
What to do:
Take OTC pain relief (ibuprofen preferred over aspirin) and call us immediately. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum — it can cause tissue damage.
Broken or Cracked Tooth
A cracked tooth can range from a hairline fracture (painful but stable) to a complete break exposing the nerve. Both require urgent attention. Cracks that reach the pulp can rapidly develop into abscesses.
What to do:
Rinse with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible. Call us — do not attempt to bond or glue the tooth at home.
Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsion)
A completely dislodged permanent tooth is a time-critical emergency. The window for successful re-implantation is approximately 30 to 60 minutes from the time of injury.
What to do:
Handle the tooth by the crown only — do not touch the root. Rinse gently with water. If possible, place it back in the socket or keep it in milk or between your cheek and gum. Call immediately and come straight in.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that can spread beyond the tooth to the jaw, neck, and in rare cases, become life-threatening. Symptoms include severe throbbing pain, swollen gum or jaw, fever, and difficulty swallowing.
What to do:
Call us immediately. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room — this indicates the infection may be spreading. Abscess is a true medical emergency.
Lost Crown or Filling
A lost crown or filling exposes vulnerable tooth structure and can cause pain, sensitivity, and rapid decay. While less immediately painful than other emergencies, it should not be left untreated for more than a day or two.
What to do:
If you have the crown, keep it safe. Dental cement (available at pharmacies) can temporarily re-seat the crown until your appointment. Call us as soon as possible to schedule a same-day or next-day visit.
Soft Tissue Injury
Lacerations to the lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums from trauma, biting, or impact can bleed significantly and may require immediate care — especially if the bleeding does not slow within 15 minutes.
What to do:
Clean the area gently and apply firm pressure with gauze or a clean cloth. If bleeding is severe or doesn't slow, go to urgent care or the ER. For moderate injuries that have slowed, call us to assess whether sutures or further treatment are needed.
Broken Dental Appliance / Orthodontic Wire
A broken retainer, snapped wire, or dislodged aligner can cause pain, injury to soft tissues, and shift teeth quickly if left in place. Patients with active orthodontic treatment should treat this as urgent.
What to do:
If a wire is poking soft tissue, use orthodontic wax or a pencil eraser to temporarily cover the sharp end. Do not attempt to cut or remove wires yourself. Call us immediately for same-day assessment.
Loose or Partially Dislodged Tooth
A tooth that has been pushed sideways, partially out of its socket, or is visibly loose after trauma requires immediate care. Even if pain is minimal, the tooth's blood supply may be compromised.
What to do:
Do not attempt to move or reposition the tooth yourself. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us immediately — timing is critical for preserving the tooth.
