Your Westlake Village dental cleaningWhat to expect, and why it matters
A professional cleaning is more than it sounds on paper — it is one of the most important visits you will make for long-term oral health. Even with excellent brushing and flossing at home, plaque hardens into tartar in areas that are difficult to reach. Left undisturbed, that buildup contributes to gum inflammation, decay, and bad breath.
At Westlake Smile Design, we have spent more than three decades helping Westlake Village and Conejo Valley families stay ahead of those problems. The research connecting oral health to conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes continues to grow; your cleaning appointment is where many early warning signs are first noticed.
Our hygienists are gentle, thorough, and focused on making sure you understand what they see in your mouth. You will never feel rushed out the door — we want you to leave knowing exactly where your oral health stands and what you can do between visits to protect it.
What's included in a Westlake Smile Design cleaning appointment
Your cleaning appointment at our Westlake Village office is a complete preventive visit — not just a polish and a wave goodbye. Here's what happens from start to finish:
1
Full Mouth Examination
We begin with a careful visual examination of your teeth, gums, tongue, and soft tissues, looking for signs of decay, inflammation, or other changes. For new patients, or when it is time for updated records, we may take digital X-rays so nothing below the gum line is missed.
2
Tartar & Plaque Removal (Scaling)
Using a combination of hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers, we remove plaque and hardened tartar from all tooth surfaces, including below the gum line where brushing cannot reach. This step is the foundation of preventing both cavities and periodontal disease.
3
Polishing
A professional-grade prophy paste smooths the enamel surfaces and helps lift superficial stains from coffee, tea, or wine. Smooth teeth are less hospitable to new plaque formation until your next visit.
4
Flossing
Your hygienist flosses between every contact point — partly to remove any remaining debris, but also to check for areas of gum bleeding, tightness, or early interproximal decay that can only be detected with floss. This step takes two minutes and catches problems that X-rays alone sometimes miss.
5
Fluoride Treatment (Optional)
For patients who want additional protection — especially those with a history of cavities, sensitive teeth, or early signs of enamel erosion — we offer a professional fluoride treatment at the end of your cleaning. It takes about two minutes, is completely painless, and provides measurable remineralization benefit.
6
Doctor Exam & Treatment Review
Following your cleaning, Dr. Hakimi or Dr. Eben will conduct a full clinical examination of your teeth and bite, review your X-rays, and discuss any findings with you directly. If there is anything that needs attention — a small cavity, a cracked filling, early signs of wear — you will hear about it in plain language, with your options clearly explained. No surprises. No pressure. Just information.
Routine cleaning vs. deep cleaning — what's the difference?
Not every cleaning is the same — and understanding the difference matters for both your oral health and your appointment expectations. Here's how the two main types compare:
Comparison of routine dental cleaning versus deep cleaning
Routine Cleaning
Deep Cleaning
Also called
Prophy / Preventive cleaning
SRP / Deep cleaning / Periodontal therapy
Who it's for
Patients with healthy gums or mild gingivitis
Patients with gum disease / periodontal pockets
What's cleaned
Surfaces above and at the gum line
Surfaces above and below the gum line, into pockets
Anesthesia needed
No — comfortable without numbing
Often yes — local anesthetic used for comfort
Appointment length
45–60 minutes
Often split across two appointments (one per side)
Frequency
Every 6 months (every 3–4 months if high risk)
As directed by your doctor; typically 3–4 month recall
Goal
Prevention — maintain healthy teeth & gums
Treatment — halt progression of gum disease
Insurance coverage
Typically 100% covered at preventive frequency
Usually covered; may require periodontal diagnosis
If you're unsure which type of cleaning is right for you, that's exactly what your exam appointment will determine. Dr. Hakimi or Dr. Eben will measure your periodontal pocket depths, assess your gum health, review your X-rays, and make a clear recommendation — explained in full before any treatment begins.
Why your twice-yearly Westlake dental cleaning is worth every minute
Most patients know they should get their teeth cleaned twice a year. Fewer know exactly why — and the reasons go significantly beyond having a brighter smile.
Without Regular Cleanings
Plaque hardens into tartar within 24–72 hours — only removable professionally
Gingivitis silently progresses into periodontitis (irreversible)
Small cavities grow into root canals or extractions
Oral cancer, lesions, and abnormal tissue go undetected
Systemic inflammation from gum disease elevates cardiovascular risk
Staining builds up year over year
With Consistent Twice-Yearly Cleanings
Tartar removed before it causes irreversible bone or gum damage
Gingivitis identified and addressed early, before bone loss occurs
Decay caught small — filled quickly, cheaply, and with minimal discomfort
Oral cancer screening performed at every exam appointment
Reduced oral bacteria load supports overall systemic health
Polishing at each visit maintains natural tooth brightness
Teeth cleaning for kids, teens, and adults
The whole family, one office
Westlake Smile Design welcomes every generation under one roof on Hampshire Road. From a child's first cleaning to preventive care for busy parents and seniors, our hygienists coordinate with the doctors so your family's records, goals, and scheduling stay simple — without sacrificing thorough, personalized care.
Children's Cleanings (Ages 3 and up)
Early visits help kids build healthy habits for life. We keep appointments gentle and positive, coach brushing and flossing in age-appropriate ways, and watch for spacing, eruption, or habits that could affect development — all while making the dental chair feel like a normal part of growing up.
Teen Cleanings
The teen years bring shifting teeth, orthodontic appliances, wisdom teeth, and packed school calendars. We tailor cleanings to work around braces or aligners when needed, reinforce home care that fits a busy routine, and flag concerns early so small issues do not turn into urgent problems later.
Adult and Senior Cleanings
Dental needs change with time — gum health, existing crowns or implants, medications, and dexterity can all influence how we approach your visit. Our hygienists adjust technique and pacing for comfort while still delivering the same meticulous standard of care, whether you are in your thirties or enjoying retirement.
Why Westlake Village patients choose us for their dental cleaning
There's no shortage of dental offices in the Conejo Valley. Here's what our patients tell us sets the experience apart at Westlake Smile Design:

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) available for patients with dental anxiety — including during routine cleanings
We never rush — your appointment is yours for the scheduled time, not squeezed between procedures
Experienced, Consistent Hygiene Team
Our hygienists have been with the practice for years — you'll see familiar faces at every recall visit
They know your history, remember your sensitivities, and treat you as an individual — not a chart
Gentle technique is a priority, not an afterthought. Patients with sensitive gums are handled with extra care
Transparent, No-Surprise Appointments
Before any additional treatment is discussed, we explain exactly what we found and what your options are
We never recommend treatment you don't need. Our philosophy is conservative and patient-led
We'll review your insurance coverage with you before your appointment so you know what to expect
Convenient Hours & Location

Serving patients from Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, and Oak Park
For the vast majority of patients, the answer is yes — and often at 100%. Most PPO dental insurance plans classify routine cleanings and exams as preventive care and cover them fully, including both the cleaning and the doctor’s exam, at the standard twice-per-year frequency.
Westlake Smile Design accepts most traditional PPO dental insurance plans. We do not participate in HMO plans, but we'll file your insurance claims on your behalf for any plan we accept. Call us at (805) 497-9585 or contact us online to verify that we accept your specific plan before your appointment.
What Does a Teeth Cleaning Cost Without Insurance?
If you don't have dental insurance — or are between plans — a routine cleaning and exam at our Westlake Village office is still very accessible. Typical out-of-pocket costs for a prophylaxis (adult cleaning) range from $100 to $200, and we're happy to discuss payment options and in-office financing for patients without coverage.
Don't Let Your Insurance Benefits Expire
Important for patients
Most dental insurance plans run on a calendar year — and unused preventive benefits expire on December 31st. If you haven't had both of your covered cleanings this year, you're leaving money on the table. Call us to schedule before your benefits reset.
Our dental cleaning practice is located in Westlake Village, and we welcome patients from across the region. If you're looking for teeth cleaning near Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, or any of the surrounding communities, our Hampshire Road office is likely the closest quality option to you:
Westlake Village — our home for 30+ years
Agoura Hills — 10 minutes via Kanan Road
Calabasas & Hidden Hills — 12 minutes via the 101
Oak Park — 15 minutes west on the 101
Moorpark — 20 minutes via the 23 Freeway
Malibu — 25 minutes via Malibu Canyon Road
Thousand Oaks & Newbury Park — 10–15 minutes via the 101 Freeway
New patients are always welcome. If you're looking for a dental hygienist in the Conejo Valley who combines clinical thoroughness with genuine comfort, we'd love to be your practice.

My teeth required a lot of work during the cleaning because I missed several months since my last visit. The entire session was still amazingly comfortable. The hygienist was tremendously skillful to get the job done without causing any discomfort.

The staff and Dentist were informative. I received more information from the Dentist then my past Dentist. He informed me of my options and gave me a simple plan to get the services done. The office staffed worked with my insurance. Wonderful Experience !

Dr. Eben is very pedantic in his assessment and inspection. He was very clear what needs to be corrected. I liked his feedback if he was in my place. Very gentle hands. He gave me two options to ponder. Very well mannered and articulate. Yes, I would recommend him.
