If it's your first visit, we take full records including digital X-rays (when appropriate) and a comprehensive new patient assessment.
Using specialized hand instruments and, where needed, an ultrasonic scaler, your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from all tooth surfaces — including below the gum line where your toothbrush simply cannot reach. This is the step that actually prevents gum disease from progressing. No toothbrush or floss routine, no matter how disciplined, can do what a professional scaling does.
Once scaling is complete, we polish your teeth using a professional-grade prophy paste. The gritty texture removes surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, and other common culprits, and leaves your enamel smooth — which actually makes it harder for new plaque to adhere between visits. Your teeth will look and feel noticeably cleaner immediately after this step.
Your hygienist flosses between every contact point — partly to remove any remaining debris, but also to check for areas of gum bleeding, tightness, or early interproximal decay that can only be detected with floss. This step takes two minutes and catches problems that X-rays alone sometimes miss.
For patients who want additional protection — especially those with a history of cavities, sensitive teeth, or early signs of enamel erosion — we offer a professional fluoride treatment at the end of your cleaning. It takes about two minutes, is completely painless, and provides measurable remineralization benefit.
Following your cleaning, Dr. Hakimi or Dr. Eben will conduct a full clinical examination of your teeth and bite, review your X-rays, and discuss any findings with you directly. If there is anything that needs attention — a small cavity, a cracked filling, early signs of wear — you will hear about it in plain language, with your options clearly explained. No surprises. We recommend a child's first dental visit around age 3, or when their first permanent teeth begin to emerge. For the vast majority of patients, the answer is yes — and often at 100%. Most PPO dental insurance plans classify routine cleanings and exams as preventive care and cover them fully, including both the cleaning and the doctor’s exam, at the standard twice-per-year frequency.
Westlake Smile Design accepts most traditional PPO dental insurance plans. We do not participate in HMO plans, but we'll file your insurance claims on your behalf for any plan we accept. If you don't have dental insurance — or are between plans — a routine cleaning and exam at our Westlake Village office is still very accessible. A routine adult cleaning and exam at Westlake Smile Design typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. First-time patients take a little longer — usually 60 to 75 minutes — because we take a complete set of records, digital X-rays (when due), and a full new patient health history. We schedule adequate time for every appointment so the process never feels rushed.
For most patients with healthy gums, professional teeth cleaning is very comfortable — a little scraping sensation, some vibration from the ultrasonic scaler, and a gritty polish. If you have sensitive teeth or inflamed gums, there can be some tenderness, particularly around the gum line. Let your hygienist know before they begin — we adjust our technique for sensitive patients, and nitrous oxide is available if you'd like extra comfort even for a routine cleaning.
A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) focuses on the visible tooth surfaces and just below the gum line — it's preventive and appropriate for patients with healthy gums. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes further below the gum line into periodontal pockets, and is used to treat active gum disease. Your doctor will recommend a deep cleaning only if your gum measurements indicate it's clinically necessary — it won't be suggested without a clear reason.
