Your Westlake Village dental cleaningWhat to expect, and why it matters

A dental cleaning in Westlake Village sounds simple — and in many ways, it is. But what happens at your cleaning appointment is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term oral health. It's also, we'd argue, one of the most underestimated.

At Westlake Smile Design, we've been providing dental cleanings to Westlake Village residents and families from across the Conejo Valley for over 30 years. In that time, we've seen firsthand how much difference a consistent cleaning schedule makes — not just for teeth, but for overall health. The research connecting oral health to cardiovascular disease, diabetes management, and even cognitive function continues to grow. The twice-yearly cleaning isn't just a habit. It's one of the most cost-effective health appointments you can keep.

Our hygienists are gentle, experienced, and thorough. We take the time to do it right — and we take the time to explain what we're seeing, so you leave with a clear understanding of your oral health, not just a polished smile.

What's included in a Westlake Smile Design cleaning appointment

Your cleaning appointment at our Westlake Village office is a complete preventive visit — not just a polish and a wave goodbye. Here's what happens from start to finish:

  • Full Mouth Examination

Before we touch a single tooth, your hygienist performs a visual examination of your entire mouth — teeth, gums, tongue, and the soft tissues of your cheeks and palate. We're looking for early signs of decay, gum inflammation, recession, or any changes since your last visit. If it's your first visit, we take full records including digital X-rays (when appropriate) and a comprehensive new patient assessment.

  • Tartar & Plaque Removal (Scaling)

Using specialized hand instruments and, where needed, an ultrasonic scaler, your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from all tooth surfaces — including below the gum line where your toothbrush simply cannot reach. This is the step that actually prevents gum disease from progressing. No toothbrush or floss routine, no matter how disciplined, can do what a professional scaling does.

  • Polishing

Once scaling is complete, we polish your teeth using a professional-grade prophy paste. The gritty texture removes surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, and other common culprits, and leaves your enamel smooth — which actually makes it harder for new plaque to adhere between visits. Your teeth will look and feel noticeably cleaner immediately after this step.

  • Flossing

Your hygienist flosses between every contact point — partly to remove any remaining debris, but also to check for areas of gum bleeding, tightness, or early interproximal decay that can only be detected with floss. This step takes two minutes and catches problems that X-rays alone sometimes miss.

  • Fluoride Treatment (Optional)

For patients who want additional protection — especially those with a history of cavities, sensitive teeth, or early signs of enamel erosion — we offer a professional fluoride treatment at the end of your cleaning. It takes about two minutes, is completely painless, and provides measurable remineralization benefit.

  • Doctor Exam & Treatment Review

Following your cleaning, Dr. Hakimi or Dr. Eben will conduct a full clinical examination of your teeth and bite, review your X-rays, and discuss any findings with you directly. If there is anything that needs attention — a small cavity, a cracked filling, early signs of wear — you will hear about it in plain language, with your options clearly explained. No surprises. No pressure. Just information.

Routine cleaning vs. deep cleaning — what's the difference?

Not every cleaning is the same — and understanding the difference matters for both your oral health and your appointment expectations. Here's how the two main types compare:

Comparison of routine dental cleaning versus deep cleaning
Routine Prophylaxis (Standard Cleaning)Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Also calledProphy / Preventive cleaningSRP / Deep cleaning / Periodontal therapy
Who it's forPatients with healthy gums or mild gingivitisPatients with gum disease / periodontal pockets
What's cleanedSurfaces above and at the gum lineSurfaces above and below the gum line, into pockets
Anesthesia neededNo — comfortable without numbingOften yes — local anesthetic used for comfort
Appointment length45–60 minutesOften split across two appointments (one per side)
FrequencyEvery 6 months (every 3–4 months if high risk)As directed by your doctor; typically 3–4 month recall
GoalPrevention — maintain healthy teeth & gumsTreatment — halt progression of gum disease
Insurance coverageTypically 100% covered at preventive frequencyUsually covered; may require periodontal diagnosis

If you're unsure which type of cleaning is right for you, that's exactly what your exam appointment will determine. Dr. Hakimi or Dr. Eben will measure your periodontal pocket depths, assess your gum health, review your X-rays, and make a clear recommendation — explained in full before any treatment begins.

Why your twice-yearly Westlake dental cleaning is worth every minute

Most patients know they should get their teeth cleaned twice a year. Fewer know exactly why — and the reasons go significantly beyond having a brighter smile. If you are experiencing sudden pain or trauma, visit our dental emergency page or call (805) 497-9585.

Without Regular Cleanings

  • Plaque hardens into tartar within 24–72 hours — only removable professionally
  • Gingivitis silently progresses into periodontitis (irreversible)
  • Small cavities grow into root canals or extractions
  • Oral cancer, lesions, and abnormal tissue go undetected
  • Systemic inflammation from gum disease elevates cardiovascular risk
  • Staining builds up year over year

With Consistent Twice-Yearly Cleanings

  • Tartar removed before it causes irreversible bone or gum damage
  • Gingivitis identified and addressed early, before bone loss occurs
  • Decay caught small — filled quickly, cheaply, and with minimal discomfort
  • Oral cancer screening performed at every exam appointment
  • Reduced oral bacteria load supports overall systemic health
  • Polishing at each visit maintains natural tooth brightness

Teeth cleaning for kids, teens, and adults — the whole family, one office

One of the most practical things about Westlake Smile Design is that we genuinely see the whole family. You don't need a separate pediatric dentist for your kids and a different office for yourself — we handle dental cleanings and exams for patients of all ages in one welcoming, comfortable environment.

Children's Cleanings (Ages 3 and up)

We recommend a child's first dental visit around age 3, or when their first permanent teeth begin to emerge. Children's cleanings at our Westlake Village office are gentle, unhurried, and designed to make the experience genuinely positive — building the dental habits that last a lifetime. We don't rush, we explain everything in kid-friendly language, and we celebrate every brave patient. Many of our patients have been coming to us since they were toddlers and are now bringing their own children.

Teen Cleanings

Adolescence is one of the highest-risk periods for dental problems — shifting teeth, changes in diet, inconsistent brushing habits, and the emergence of wisdom teeth all create new challenges. We pay particular attention during teen cleaning appointments, and we're direct with teenagers (in a supportive way) about what we're seeing and what they can do about it. If orthodontic needs become apparent, we'll discuss Invisalign Teen or refer out where appropriate.

Adult and Senior Cleanings

Adult dental needs change over time — and our cleaning protocols reflect that. Patients with a history of gum disease, dry mouth (a common side effect of medications), worn enamel, or dental restorations like crowns and implants receive cleaning care tailored to their specific situation. For patients who haven't been to a dentist in several years, we approach the first appointment without judgment — just a thorough, compassionate assessment and a clear plan forward.

Does Insurance Cover Teeth Cleaning?

For the vast majority of patients, the answer is yes — and often at 100%. Most PPO dental insurance plans classify routine cleanings and exams as preventive care and cover them fully, including both the cleaning and the doctor’s exam, at the standard twice-per-year frequency.

Westlake Smile Design accepts most traditional PPO dental insurance plans. We do not participate in HMO plans, but we'll file your insurance claims on your behalf for any plan we accept. Call us at (805) 497-9585 or contact us online to verify that we accept your specific plan before your appointment.

What Does a Teeth Cleaning Cost Without Insurance?

If you don't have dental insurance — or are between plans — a routine cleaning and exam at our Westlake Village office is still very accessible. Typical out-of-pocket costs for a prophylaxis (adult cleaning) range from $100 to $200, and we're happy to discuss payment options and in-office financing for patients without coverage.

Don't Let Your Insurance Benefits Expire

Important for patients

Most dental insurance plans run on a calendar year — and unused preventive benefits expire on December 31st. If you haven't had both of your covered cleanings this year, you're leaving money on the table. Call us to schedule before your benefits reset.

What our Westlake Village patients sayabout their cleaning experience

My teeth required a lot of work during the cleaning because I missed several months since my last visit. The entire session was still amazingly comfortable. The hygienist was tremendously skillful to get the job done without causing any discomfort.

Dental cleaning in Westlake Village — frequently asked questions

The American Dental Association recommends a professional dental cleaning and exam every six months for most adults and children. Patients with a history of gum disease, high cavity risk, or certain systemic conditions (such as diabetes) may benefit from more frequent cleanings — typically every 3 to 4 months. At your first visit, our doctors will assess your oral health and recommend the cleaning frequency that is right for you specifically.

A routine adult cleaning and exam at Westlake Smile Design typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. First-time patients take a little longer — usually 60 to 75 minutes — because we take a complete set of records, digital X-rays (when due), and a full new patient health history. We schedule adequate time for every appointment so the process never feels rushed.

For most patients with healthy gums, professional teeth cleaning is very comfortable — a little scraping sensation, some vibration from the ultrasonic scaler, and a gritty polish. If you have sensitive teeth or inflamed gums, there can be some tenderness, particularly around the gum line. Let your hygienist know before they begin — we adjust our technique for sensitive patients, and nitrous oxide is available if you'd like extra comfort even for a routine cleaning.

A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) focuses on the visible tooth surfaces and just below the gum line — it's preventive and appropriate for patients with healthy gums. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes further below the gum line into periodontal pockets, and is used to treat active gum disease. Your doctor will recommend a deep cleaning only if your gum measurements indicate it's clinically necessary — it won't be suggested without a clear reason. Learn more about periodontal disease treatment.

Most PPO dental plans cover routine cleaning and exam visits at 100% as preventive care, twice per year. Westlake Smile Design accepts most PPO dental insurance plans and will verify your specific coverage before your appointment. If you are unsure whether we accept your plan, call (805) 497-9585 and our front desk team will check for you.

Yes. We see patients of all ages at Westlake Smile Design, including children from around age 3 onward. Our team is experienced with pediatric patients and makes every effort to make children's appointments positive, gentle, and anxiety-free. Simply brush and floss as you normally would. There's no special preparation needed. If you have dental anxiety, let us know when you book — we'll note it in your file and make sure your hygienist is aware.
